off residence (Its the worst!)
The place can be pretty boring
I want to graduate!
Hey kids, I'm Alex, 20, female, in the Laurentian program. Taking Political Science, going into my 3rd year, and so glad that I chose this program and this school.
I lived in ghetto res in first year and it was alright, busy and full of people which is great if you're into partying and socializing. All the RAs are great as well. I lived in a house near the school last year and intend to do the same thing again in September.
The only thing I wish I could change about Georgian is the lack of extracurricular. SAC does a good job of accomodating the partying, bar hopping, snowboarding crowd, but I find that there are very few, shall we say, intellectual activities.
However, if I may, I'm pleased to bring up the fact that there's a great Amnesty International group that's been started at the school, and I'm also proud to announce that the Vagina Monologues will be coming to Georgian soon, and it's going to be entirely student run and student acted. I encourage everyone to get involved, because um.. I need volunteers and actors. lol.
Future plans include both saving and taking over the world.
Since you're new to Georgian, my biggest, BIGGEST recommendation is to check out the Steve + Chris show on Tuesday nights at the pub. I promise you, it is the most fun you will have for the entire time that you go to Georgian.
The Amnesty International group sounds like it could be stimulating for me, I'm not to great with social stuff, but I may give it a shot. As for the Vagina Monologues.. uhm.. what is that? I know I'm ignorant, but at least I'm curious! ;)
So.. Steve + Chris show, eh? but if you're so adamant about it, I better do that! :)
Sorry that I didn't respond to this when you posted it!
Amnesty is a great group, and I'm the president this year and I have.. big plans. So far. lol. No worries about the social stuff, most of the people who do extracurricular at the school aren't the overbearing type - we all just generally want something to do with our spare time.
Vagina Monologues is a theatre production that's performed all over the world around Valentines Day - it started as one woman (Eve Ensler) who went around interviewing women about their vaginas and about being women. She turned it into a live stage show with 3 or more women sitting on stools, telling the stories. Some of them are long and funny, some are sad, and some are cute short ones like "If your vagina could wear clothes, what would it wear?". The anonymous comment below me mentioned that there's been a show at the school, so I think that one of the women's groups in Barrie put it on every year. Always a good time though, for men and women, so I recommend it.
And yeah, Steve and Chris are great. I wouldn't say that either of them are amazing singers but it's just a fun time, everyone sings along and generally leaves with a smile on their face.
Hey, I've been wondering about meeting others here at the college, if you have msn, plz add me: email@example.com
I haven't been to the Steve and Chris show, yet. And I got bored last night and was half tempted to go to the Wicked Wednesday event, but I didn't want to go alone..
Don't suppose you or anyone else would care to join a newbie on her ventures? ;)
Oh, and eh where do I sign up for Amnesty? ^^;

They had the Vagina Monologues this past year and the previous year as well. I went to see it two years back it was pretty cool.. I enjoyed reading the book much more though.
Steve and Chris is alright but not my favourite... what intellectual activities were you thinking of? You know you can start your own clubs in the school.. it's all about finding a crowd who is also interested
The Monologues were put on by students at the school? How have I not heard about this?
There are a few things that I'm planning for this year, and hopefully there are other people who are interested in getting involved, since I'm going up to Sudbury next year.

OH, not by the students. In fact I was one of the few students who even attended. The Gyphon Theater is more to keep older Barrie Residents entertained sadly.
If your starting events email me at firstname.lastname@example.org... I love to know what's happening around the college. I'd say post it on my Livejournal but I don't have one amazingly enough lol. I may get one though ;)
You're a student? program and the like, please?? and msn if you have it. :) email@example.com
i'm going to be doing my first year of graphic design this september. i'm gonna be living in res. and am moving from kenora, ont. [about 2hrs from winnipeg]. i'm 18 [19 on july26th] and have never been to barrie.
i hoping to meet some interesting people and have some good times. and perhaps learn something, too :)
Sounds awesome! We'll be in the same program, perhaps we should meet up somewhere. Actually I was thinking everyone here in this group should meet up sometime on campus.
that'd be awesome to 'know' someone in my program. when we get moved in and whanot, we'll have to organize a dorky lj meet-up for all us cool kids :)
Haha, indeed. Which res are you moving into? I'll be in the new residence on campus. :)
there's more than one residence? i was accepted into the barrie campus residence, so i guess the same one as you.
i feel like a dumbass not knowing about the residence now. hah.
Actually I didn't really know for awhile either. I was confused in the beginning as to why there were two separate residence sites, it wasnt until I visited them at Preview weekend that I figured it out, haha. So, you're not alone. If you got accepted into the Barrie "Green" residence, that was the old one. :)
hmm. well, i applied for a double occupancy suite with my sister and we were both accepted, so i guess[hope] it's the new residence we're in.
Indeed, that would be the new one. :) Your sister eh? you two twins or just siblings?
just siblings; she's four years older than me and has already gone to uni but randomly changed her mind as to what she would like to do with her life. now she's starting all over again with college. haha.
i'm convinced we're gonna be the biggest losers in res. :/
aww! naw, you won't be. At least you know who're rooming with! I have no clue! We should continue to chat on msn if you have it, here's mine:
consider yourself added :)
Hey..I'm taking social work this fall at the Orillia Campus. Anyone else goin for that???
I'm Matt, taking my first year of graphic design. Staying in the Georgian Greens off-campus residence. That's about it.
Hey fellow graphic designer first year, lol. Perhaps we'll see each other in class? I be the short, quiet, indian girl with just-past-shoulder-length hair and glasses...
were you at orientation? I was wearing a black against me shirt, a red bandana in my pocket and a black tattered messenger hat.
I was there for the first hour and then I bailed and stayed in my room, lol. I know.. lame. But I dont like crowds.
Are you at the off-campus rez now? I'm over at the library. I have 'net access at the rez but its blocked due to some malware I havent managed to get rid of, so I would be on msn now, but I'm not due to that.
yeah I'm at georgian greens, if thats where you're staying let me know your suite number and I'll drop by sometime.
No, actually I'm staying at the other georgian residence on campus, its the blue and white building across from the Helen and Arch Brown building/Gallery. My suite number is 634, drop by anytime.. if you're able to.. or email me: firstname.lastname@example.org
Hey, I think I saw you today in typography class, with Kim Beggs. Were you the one wearing the "Eat the Rich" t-shirt (if I remember correctly). Like I said, I be the indian girl, WITH glasses, my hair's wavy, not curly (tho sometimes it looks like it is). uhm.. yea.. that's all.
i stood beside you at orientation for a while.
i was the girl with brown pants, black zip-up hoodie and a bright yellow/blue/green/orange striped bag. [as well as short, dark purple&blonde hair, glasses, pierced nose&lip, etc.]
also, i enjoyed the message on your friends-only post; we should hang out sometime.
I remember you, you seemed cool. We should definitely hang out. Where are you living?
What program are you studying?
I took 1 year of Art and Design Fundies and now I'm entering Year 2 of Computer Programming
What year are you in?
Living in residence? off-residence?
Off Residence... though I did live in Residence for one and a half years
Like it? Don't like it?
Residence is too noisy! But then again so is my place...
Marriage in Toronto... far far away from Georgian :p
So this is pretty delayed and it seems this community has kinda fallen asleep.........
But anyways I got accepted to the Laurentian @ Georgian program for Sociology, hopefully I'll get into on campus rez at least for first year and I'm not really sure what the plan is once I'm finished at Georgian.....I'm not a big fan of plans:)
